The Racing Awards for season 2019 were held at Zouk Night Club at Clarke Quay on Thursday evening, February 6th. The gala evening was again a great success for the stable, again showcasing Cliff’s talents as a trainer. Undefeated galloper Inferno was crowned Champion 2 year old for 2019, and the Greg Perry bred and owned What’s New Champion 4 year Old for 2019. The stable was represented by nominees in all bar two of the categories, again highlighting an excellent year in Singapore feature races.
Inferno, a handsome son of Holy Roman Emperor made his race track debut on the 7th of July in the Magic Millions 2yo in Training Sale Stakes over 1200m, where he put in great display of raw power, by overcoming barrier 11 in the field of 12 to win easily. After obliterating the field in the Singapore 2 year old series final on 19th of July the Group 2 Aushorse Golden Horseshoe over 1200m, this time jumping from barrier 15, the Champion Two Year Old was perhaps the easiest category winner of the awards night.
Barree Stable Managing Owner Glenn Whittenbury couldn’t make the awards evening as the devastating news of two positive tests for the Wuhan virus at his usual Singapore lodgings The Grand Hyatt Hotel, had spooked him greatly. Mr Whittenbury has assured stable representatives that he will be attending Inferno’s comeback race later this month providing surgical face masks have been purchased for his expected return to Singapore.
On hand to accept the award on Mr Whittenbury’s behalf was able replacement Mr Dennis Cornwell. Mr Cornwell is known to love the spotlight at Night Clubs in Singapore and it was quite fitting he accepted the Champion Two Year old Trophy at Zouk Nightclub. Never shy of a media opportunity, the Glory Hound Mr Cornwell was quick to snatch the microphone from MC Nick Childs, and delivered the longest acceptance speech of the night.
Bonnie mare What’s New won the first two legs of the 4 year old series in 2019, the Group 3 Silver Bowl and Group 2 Stewards Cup before enduring a horror run in The Singapore Derby to finish a gallant 4th. Bred by long time stable clients Greenwich Stud Pty Ltd (Greg and Lisa Perry), What’s New will chase more black type success in 2020, before returning to Australia to join Greenwich Stud’s magnificent broodmare band.
Inferno continued Mr Whittenbury’s luck at the New Zealand Bloodstock Sales, where Singapore Champion and 2016 Horse of the year Debt Collector was also selected and purchased by Cliff Brown Racing. Inferno a 2018 yearling purchase has since gone on to win both of his starts as a 3 year old including the Group 3 Saas Fee Stakes.
The 2020 racing awards, again showed Cliff Brown Racing talents for choosing top class racehorses as yearlings and un-raced 2 year old breeze up horses. Others to grace the stage at past Singapore Racing Awards purchased by Cliff, include dual Champion Sprinter Zac Spirit, Horse of The Year Step It Up, Champion Three year old, Champion Miler and Horse of the year Debt Collector, and now we can add Inferno to those purchases that have graced Singapore racing’s Honour Roll.
